New AA compliant site for ScotlandsImages

CiT are pleased to announce the recent launch of a new AA compliant website for ScotlandsImages.com. The government has pledged that all public sector websites must be Level AA compliant by 2010.

Web accessibility is not only a requirement, it also makes good business sense: ScotlandsImages.com can now be confident that their website is truly cross platform and accessible to disabled web users, increasing their potential client base by an estimated 8%.

AA compliance is a standard of accessibility determined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), an international organisation which develops standards for the Internet. The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) is a working party set up by W3C to set standards for making web pages accessible to as many people as possible. Their guidelines are seen as a standard all over the world.

  • A - The site incorporates all the "must-have" checkpoints of the WAI guidelines. This gives basic access to most groups of disabled users. This is considered to be the minimum level of compliance.
  • AA - the site incorporates all the "should-have" checkpoints. This brings down all of the significant barriers to users. This is considered to be the preferred level of compliance.

Features for AA compliance include;
  • Alternate text for images and links
  • Documents are readable without requiring a stylesheet
  • Pages remain usable when scripts, applets, etc are turned off
  • The site does not use technologies that require the downloading of new software
  • Content is clear, concise and accessible to all
  • The site has been tested using the following: keyboard only, JavaScript turned off, stylesheets turned off, linearised order, text only browser or screen reader

In addition to the AA compliance the ScotlandsImages.com site had a general makeover adding more features and enhanced graphics.

“We have met the challenges of ‘AA’ compliance whilst retaining the sophisticated functionality and features that make our solutions exceptional in our domain. As mobile technologies continue to advance, it is a great asset for our clients to have a website that is also accessible via PDAs and Smartphones”. Richard Cruz, CEO of CiT Digital
